Toilet and shower repairs

It was one of the first aims I wanted to get as soon as I arrived at Children’s Town and now, it is already fulfilled.
After making an study and talking to technicians, we decided to carry out a project to restore toilets and showers in our shcool. After 3 days of construction works, children could enjoy their first shower. Many children had never had a shower before.The oldrest ones didn’t remember to have a shower since they arrived at Children’s Town. The luckiest ones had had a shower before but not in the school.
The slovenliness, the lack of hygienic habits and lack of means made them not to use showers any more when they broke instead of repairing them. They continued using the traditional way (soap and a bucket).
It is indescribable children’s faces when they were having the first shower. Now, the big problem is how to take them out of showers.
I would like to thank all contributors and sponsors for their support.
The invested amount was 16200 meticais (405 euros).

Fue una de los objetivos que me marqué poco antes de llegar a CT y ya es una realidad.
Después de hacer un estudio y hablar con los técnicos, se decidió poner en marcha un plan para rehabilitar duchas y aseos en el centro. Después de 3 dias de obras, los niños pudieron disfrutar de la que para muchos fue su primera ducha. Muchos no la habían tomado nunca, y los mas mayores no recuerdan haberlas visto funcionar des de que llevaban internos en el centro. Algunos de ellos (los mas afortunados) la habían tomado alguna vez estando fuera de ahí.
La dejadez, la falta de costumbre y la falta de recursos, provocó que una vez que se rompieran dejaran de utilizarse y se continuaran bañando a la manera tradicional (cubo y jabón). Es indescripitible la cara de los niños al estar debajo de las duchas, sobretodo de los mas pequeños. El problema lo tenemos ahora para hacerlos salir de ahí……
Des de aquí, quiero dar las gracias a todos los esponsors y colaboradores por hacer posible este hecho.

A doctors and nurses group visits Children’s Town

Last Saturday, 20th of March, a doctors and nurses group from a private clinic visited Children’s Town.
After analyzing hygienic conditions, skin infections, complaints that most of them are suffering and the lack of medical examination, we decided to contact several organizations and ask for help.
This help arrived from a private clinic after talking to the boss and exposing him our problems.
During Saturday’s morning, most of children were checked and subjected to different tests (malaria, lungs test, cardiac test…). Unfortunately, some results were not satisfactory and these children will be subjected to more tests in a hospital.
Despite this, the aim of having periodic medical examinations for these children has been achieved. The clinic promised to visit our school once a week in order to make examinations and take care of those children in worst health conditions. In this way, we ensure an improvement in quality life and physic conditions.
I would like to thank Mr. Barreto and his doctors and nurses for their involvement in this project.
Un equipo de doctores y enfermeras visita Children’s Town

El pasado sábado 20 de marzo, un equipo de doctores y enfermeras de una clínica privada visitaron Children’s Town.
Después de ver las condiciones de higiene en la que vivian los niños, las infecciones en la piel y el cabello, las dolencia que algunos padecían y la inexisténcia de un seguimiento médico mínimo, se optó por contactar con diferentes organizaciones para ver qué ayuda nos podían ofrecer. Ésta llegó a través de de una clínica privada después de hablar con sus responsables y exponerles la problemática.
Durante la mañana del sábado gran parte de los niños del centro fueron revisados y sometidos a diferentes pruebas (malária, pruebas pulmonares, cardíacas, de vista…….). Desafortunadamente, los resultados de algunos de ellos no fueron buenos y tendrán que someterse a mas pruebas en un centro hospitalario.
A pesar de todo,el objetivo de que todos estos niños tengan un seguimiento médico mínimo se cumplió, ya que los responsables de la clínica se han comprometido a visitar el centro una vez a la semana, hacer un seguimiento de los niños y hacerse cargo de los que mas cuidado precisen. De esta manera se asegura una mejora en su calidad de vida y su condición física (muy maltrecha en algunos).
Des de aquí, quiero dar las gracias al Señor Barreto y a su equipo de doctores y enfremeras por la implicación tomada en esta causa.
