From now on, the students of both projects will participate in the competitions dressed properly. The EPP students are taking part in one local league during the weekend. The girls are also participating in games each 2-3 weeks. The EPF students started last week a Local League in Lucala, with other 10 teams. Im also playing with them.

The total amount of the equipments was 300 euros.

A partir de ahora, tanto los estudiantes de un proyecto como los del otro, podrán acceder a las competiciones que se realizan tanto a nivel local como comarcal debidamante equipados.

Los estudiantes de la EPP están participando en una liguilla local que se juega los fines de semana. Las estudiantes de EPP también juegan partidos cada 2-3 semanas. Los estudiantes de EPF comenzaron la semana pasada la Liga Municipal de fútbol de Lucala, formada por 10 equipos de la localidad. Yo también formo parte del equipo.

Las equipaciones han supuesto un desembolso de 300 euros.

So far, the EPP in Lucala has got 50 students, divided into two classes of 25 students each one. I do not believe that the number of students will be higher in the future, due to the access rules that ADPP has instituted in this type of school. So it is quite difficult to reach the 105 students that we thought we would achieve in the past. We are working in the best possible way and with the greatest joy possible with the group of students we have. We will try to make them improve in every possible way.
Talking about the routine in the school, I have to say that the first days were quite hard because the students had not the didactic stuff necessary. It is true that we had this stuff on the computers, so we just had to print it out so teachers could use it during the lessons.

To this day, we have been provided all the didactic stuff, which is just a collection of practical and theoretical activities. Each student has got one. Professors, volunteers and the other people in ADPP and I have carried out all theses didactic materials that we are going to use in all the EPP in Angola. With them it is much easier to carry out the classes and all the activities.

So each activity has its own theoretical part, which is first introduced by the teacher and then discussed by the students. The new thing in EPP is that twice per month students have to assist to class on Sundays, although these activities aren’t theoretical but playful or sporty. With this new little project we hope to know each other better. We tend to spend mornings or afternoons together, carrying out sporty or dancing competitions … All together with the students’ relatives and people from the community.
I would like to deal too with the low formative level that some students and teachers have. Obviously, it has not been a great surprise for me, because I already knew this situation in Mozambique and I knew what was the situation in Angola after one year working here. Despite all these, it is quite difficult working since there is a great difference among students’ levels in the same class.

I mean that if in one class there are 24 students, two know how to write and read quite well, 6 have difficulties, 10 are not good at it and 6 are extremely bad at writing or reading or they don’t even know how to. You are always concerned about the dangers of ‘’leaving’’ a group, or that the other group think that classes are boring because they have a higher level. This task requires a lot of patience since you have to repeat all the things a lot of times. Sometimes, I even think that they are laughing of me, because after doing the same activity 10 times, there are students that still do not understand it. I am planning some extra classes for those students who have difficulties in writing and reading on the afternoons. These classes will not be carried out all the afternoons, as I have not more time. But I will try to carry them out three times per week.

Some teachers also have difficulties. Despite the fact that some of them do their best to improve, they present a lack of knowledge. This situation was caused by the massive production of teachers in which the teachers were not really well formed. I wonder how is possible that a teacher has difficulties in writing or reading. This worsens when I give them the stuff to carry out the classes and they do not know what to do with it. All these teachers are just victims of a government that just wants to justify all the foreign investments in education. They tend to say that each year X students get their degree, or that each year X students finish their secondary education. But all these facts are not true, because 80% of them, present a level 4 o 5 times lower that the one that they should have. One thing is true, African tend to be extremely talkative. The bad part is that they have not been taught how to order and arrange their ideas or how they have to talk. I tend to compare this situation when you get a defective machine. I mean that the machine works, but you have always to have a look at what it is being doing and how. Because if you don’t have a look at it, it stops working. So the factories make the mistake, not me. This example is really similar to what I face everyday in my school.

Even though all these situations may seem a difficulty rather than an advantage, I can admit that they make me go harder every day. I like watching the slow evolution in the students as well as in the professors, because it is incredible. It is incredible because you see their faces of joy, they realise that now they are able to carry out something without any difficulty, but in the past, they had a lot of complications. This is one of the main reasons that make me believe in the work that I do everyday. It is true that we lose our time, health and our money to carry things out. Moreover, sometimes we may face rude and mean people in our journey.

As I say, there are a lot of wonderful things in my job, but obviously, there are some that might be unpleasant and when you face them, you might have to face people who do not care about the task you are doing and they just tend to be really selfish. I apologize because I did not want to finish my writing telling you this, but I also want you to know the other situation here in Angola. Some days are really hard.

A fecha de hoy, la EPP de Lucala cuenta con 50 alumnos , divididos en dos clases de 25 alumnos cada una. No creo que el número de alumnos vaya a aumentar mucho más en el futuro, debido a la política de acceso que ADPP tiene instaurada en este tipo de escuelas. Así que llegar a los 105 que nos marcamos en el pasado, viviendo en la realidad que vivimos, lo veo una misión imposible. Trabajaremos lo mejor posible y con la máxima ilusión con el grupo de alumnos que tenemos, intentando sacar de ellos lo mejor posible y que aprendan y se formen como personas íntegras y capaces.

En los que se refiere al día a día en la escuela, decir que los primeros días de clase fueron un poco duros ya que los alumnos no disponían del material didáctico necesario para dar aulas. Sí disponíamos de él de manera digital, así que lo imprimimos para que los profesores lo pudieran utilizar durante sus lecciones. A día de hoy ya nos ha llegado el material, el cual es un recopilatorio de actividades prácticas y teóricas y del que cada alumno tiene uno. Un grupo de profesores, voluntarios y demás personal de ADPP, entre los cuales yo estaba presente, producimos este libro de materiales que vamos a usar en todas las EPP de Angola. Ahora es mucho más fácil para profesores y alumnos el seguir las clases y el poder preparar las actividades a ser realizadas. Cada actividad contiene su parte teórica, la cual es primero presentada por el profesor y discutida posteriormente por los alumnos. La innovación en las EPP es que, dos veces por mes, los alumnos tienen que venir a la escuela durante los sábados. No son actividades propiamente teóricas, más bien son actividades lúdicas y/o deportivas, la finalidad de las cuales es conocernos un poco más y hacer de la escuela un lugar para la recreación, no sólo para la formación. Pasar la mañana o la tarde juntos, realizar competiciones deportivas, de danza….. todo ello siempre con los familiares de los alumnos y gente de la comunidad como invitados.

Otro punto que me gustaría tocar es el bajo nivel formativo tanto de alumnos como de profesores. Obviamente, no ha sido una sorpresa para mi, ya que ya conocí esa realidad en Mozambique y sabía cuál era la realidad de Angola después de un año trabajando aquí. A pesar de todo, se hace difícil trabajar ya que existe una gran diferencia de niveles entre estudiantes de una misma clase. Me explico; si en una clase hay 24 alumnos, 2 saben escribir y leer más o menos bien, 6 regular, 10 mal y 6 muy mal o no saben… Siempre tienes el temor de dejar atrás a un grupo, o que el otro grupo se aburra porque ya saben cómo hacer lo que explicas….. Es una tarea que requiere mucha paciencia ya que se tienen que repetir las cosas constantemente. Incluso a veces llego a pensar que se ríen de mi, porque no entiendo que después de hacer una actividad 10 veces, aún haya un elevado número de estudiantes que no saben cómo hacerla. Ya estoy planificando unas aulas de repaso y/o refuerzo de lectura y escritura por las tardes para aquellos que precisan de esa ayuda. No podrá ser cada día debido a que no tengo tiempo para ello, pero espero que pueda ser unas 3 veces por semana.

Lo mismo pasa con los profesores. Me he encontrado con profesores que ponen empeño en su trabajo pero con enormes carencias de conocimientos a todos los niveles, fruto de una educación basada en la “producción masiva” de profesores, pero sin criterio ninguno y sin fundamento cognitivo. Porque….., cómo es posible que un profesor tenga dificultades para leer? O para escribir? O que le des el material para la clase y no sepa qué hacer con él? Han sido víctimas de un gobierno que sólo está interesado en justificar las grandes inversiones extranjeras en educación (de las cuales muchas desaparecen, y sé de lo que hablo…….), diciendo que cada año se gradúan X estudiantes, o que cada año acaban la formación secundaria X alumnos. Cuando, en realidad, el 80 % de todos ellos , tienen un nivel 4-5 veces menor (o más) del que deberían tener para la edad que les corresponde. Pero una cosa es cierta, los africanos tienen la capacidad de enrollarse como persianas cuando hablan, son infatigables locutores  Lo que pasa es que la mayoría no saben o, mejor dicho, no les han enseñado a ordenar las ideas y a estructurarlas siguiendo un hilo lógico. Si se me permite la comparación y para que se me entienda, comparo esta situación de profesores y alumnos con el recibir o adquirir una “máquina defectuosa”. Me explico: la “máquina” funciona, pero siempre tienes que estar pendiente de todo y controlarla cuando está en funcionamiento. De lo contrario, se estropea . Y el problema no los has originado tú. El problema tiene el origen en la fábrica (las escuelas primarias) que no hicieron bien su trabajo debido a la falta de medios y conocimientos. Y ahora el “material” (alumnos y profesores) se encuentra en la sociedad con enormes deficiencias en su construcción y funcionamiento (ideas y conocimientos).
Y aunque todo esto puedan parecer más contratiempos que ventajas , os puedo asegurar que es una fuente de motivación en mi día a día. Ver la evolución (aunque lenta) tanto en los alumnos como en los profesores es increíble. Verles hacer de una manera automática una cosa que antes les parecía imposible, me da una satisfacción difícil de explicar. Y por eso creo firmemente en el trabajo de las personas que venimos a trabajar aquí , ya sea por un mes, por diez años o por toda una vida. Que perdemos (o ganamos, según cómo lo miremos) nuestro tiempo, salud y, también, nuestro dinero para sacar las cosas adelante, aunque a veces nos tengamos que encontrar a malnacidos, hipócritas y farsantes en nuestro camino. Porque, como se suele decir, de” hijos de puta hay en todas partes”, y aquí en Angola no es una excepción, más bien es un mal extendido. Hay muchas cosas bonitas en este trabajo, pero también hay muchas situaciones desagradables. Y te encuentras y tienes que lidiar con personas y personajes a los cuales no les importa una mierda todo esto y actúan sólo en su propio beneficio. Y perdonad que acabe así pero es que si no lo decía corría el peligro de reventar, y también quiero que conozcáis la otra cara de todo esto. Ya que, como se suele decir, “no es oro todo lo que reluce” y hay días que se hacen muy muy cuesta arriba, os lo prometo.

Due to difficulties that some students may have when they read or write, we have decided to carry out some extra classes for them three times per week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) from 15.30 to 16.30. 28 students that have volunteered to take part in these extra classes form the group. In the next days, we will try to convince others who may also need this help in writing and reading.

The aim is to help students to achieve good levels of writing and reading so they can go on with their studies. We also have a group of six kids from the nearest community. They are studying 3rd Grade and they also want to take advantage of this opportunity. I am sure that we will have more students in the next weeks.

Also we have started with one English Club. By now, , we have 10 students.

Paulino, Domingos and myself teach these extra classes. I would like to thank with this writing to them because of their willingness to carry out this project, as it has not been an easy task to convince them to work an extra hour.

Debido a los problemas en lectura y escritura que presentan un gran número de los estudiantes de EPP, hemos decidido poner en marcha unas aulas de repaso que van a tener lugar 3 días por semana (lunes, miércoles y viernes) de las 15.30 a las 16.30h. El grupo está compuesto por 28 estudiantes que se han mostrado voluntarios a tomar parte de las aulas. En los próximos días intentaremos convencer a otros que, a nuestro parecer, también muestran déficit de lectura/escritura.

También hemos empezado con un English Club, que cuenta hasta ahora con 10 estudiantes.

El objetivo no es otro que ayudar a estos estudiantes a alcanzar un nivel óptimo de lectura/escritura para que puedan seguir sin problemas el ritmo de las aulas.
También tenemos un grupo de 6 niños/as de la comunidad más próxima que están en 3º y que quieren aprovecharse de esta iniciativa. De buen seguro el número aumenta en los próximos días.

Las aulas son realizadas por los profesores Paulino, Domingos y yo mismo.

Me gustaría desde estas líneas agradecer a los profesores su predisposición a realizar el repaso, ya que no ha sido nada difícil convencerlos para que, una vez acabadas las 6 horas lectivas diarias, se queden en la escuela 1h más.

The activity lasted for 2 hours and 30 minutes, however, the process to prepare it all took us more than one week because we had to rehearse, to look for contestants, purchase or rent of the materials that we needed, food purchase for more than 200 people (students, relatives and guests) and we also had to organize transport facilities to our contestants and all the people.

The Cultural Afternoon was divided into three parts:

• The first one, dancing groups, choir and theatre group from EPP carried out a performance of those activities that they had been rehearsing during their first month. During the performances, I could notice that they were quite nervous; anyway, it was obvious because it was their first experience. Above all, I want to congratulate them for their huge efforts during the performance.
• The second one, the people in charge of the students’ education, who some of them were relatives, went up to the stage in order to talk about their experiences during this first month in the classes. It was really nice to listen to some of them.
• The third part was the one in which the guests artists from Lucala, Cacusa and N’dalatando went up to the stage. I was extremely surprised by their professional level, specially the level from the theatre groups. We had a nice time listening to their jokes and stories about Angola.

After all these, we had a pleasant meal with all the attendees.

I’d like to thank to all the people that collaborate with the Project because without their support, we could not have carried out a good Cultural Afternoon and prepare things that without their help would not have been possible. We spent 300 euros to buy food for the attendees, for renting the sound equipment, to organize the transport facilities from N’dalatando to Cacuso, purchase of the material to decorate, cloths, oil and costumes. The students also received a meal the days before to the show because they stayed in the school after their classes.

The Cultural Afternoon was a success and I hope to repeat it.

La actividad tuvo una duración de alrededor de 2h.30min, aunque la puesta a punto nos llevó más o menos una semana entre ensayos, búsqueda de grupos, compra y/o alquiler de materiales que necesitábamos, compra de comida para los más de 200 personas (entre estudiantes, familiares e invitados), organizar transporte para los grupos , etc.

La Tarde Cultural estuvo dividida en 3 partes:

• En la primera parte, los grupo de danza, el coro y el grupo de teatro de EPP realizaron una demostración de las piezas que habían aprendido durante su primer mes de aulas. La verdad es que los nervios fueron palpables durante sus actuaciones, cosa normal teniendo en cuenta que era su “primera vez” delante del gran público. A pesar de todo, les quiero felicitar por su empeño y las ganas que mostraron antes y durante la actuación.
• En la segunda parte, los encargados de educación de los estudiantes,  sus familiares y los propios estudiantes, salieron a escena para hablar de sus experiencias durante este primer mes de aulas. Fue muy emotivo escuchar a alguno de ellos.
• La tercera parte fue el turno de los artistas invitados de Lucala, Cacuso y N’dalatando. La verdad es que me sorprendió mucho su nivel de profesionalidad, sobretodo los del grupo de teatro. Nos hicieron reír mucho con sus chistes y sus historias cotidianas de Angola.

En medio de todo eso, tuvimos una merienda para todos los asistentes, compuesta por palomitas, frutos secos, patatas, zumos, refrescos, galletas, etc.

Gracias a la ayuda de toda la gente que colabora con el proyecto, pudimos darle un “toque de calidad” a la Tarde Cultural y organizar y/o preparar cosas que , de otra manera, hubiera sido imposible realizar. Se utilizaron un total de 300 euros para la compra de comida para los asistentes, alquiler de equipo de sonido, transporte de artistas desde N’dalatando y Cacuso, compra de materiales diversos para decoración, telas, gasolina para el generedaor de energia (no tenemos red eléctrica) y piezas de ropa para los grupos de danza y teatro. Los estudiantes también recibieron merienda los día previos ya que se quedaban en la escuela a ensayar después de las clases.

Se podría decir que la Tarde Cultural fue un éxito y espero y deseo que podamos realizar más en el futuro.

Thanks for all the support from the sponsors of the project and the actions carried out in Ulldecona during the Solidary Afternoon in October. We have acquired teaching material:

• 70 notebooks packs; one for each student. They are formed by 10 notebooks each one, one for each disciplines, in total about 700 notebooks.

We are waiting the exactly number of kids that they are going to be brought up in the next community in the school, as we are going to carry up an action of the same kind as they can receive the same school material.

The cost of this action has been of 650 euros.

Gracias a la ayuda inestimable de los sponsors del proyecto y a las acciones llevadas a cabo en Ulldecona durante la Tarde Solidaria de Octubre, se ha podido adquirir material didáctico compuesto de:

• 70 batas para los alumnos
• 200 bolis de color azul
• 200 bolis de color negro
• 50 bolis color rojo
• 200 lápices
• 10 sacapuntas
• 10 reglas grandes
• 70 paquetes de cuadernos (uno por alumno), compuestos por 10 cuadernos cada uno, uno para cada disciplina (en total 700 cuadernos).

Se está a la espera de conocer el número exacto de escuelas y niños/as que van a ser educados en la comunidad próxima a la escuela, ya que se intentaría realizar una acción del mismo tipo para que también ellos/as pudieran recibir su material didáctico básico.

El monte total de esta acción han sido 650 euros.
